Plants That Repel Mosquitoes

Plants That Repel Mosquitoes

There are 5 plants that are known to repel mosquitoes. Marigolds have a smell that insects find objectionable. Rosemary is another one that has oil that repels mosquitoes. Catnip is an herb that is more effective then Deet.
Citronella is a grass like plant that company's manufacture for repelling mosquitoes.
If you are hosting an outdoor event have either Lavender oil or fresh Lavender can be used as a repellent. Spritz your tablecloths with the fresh soothing scent of lavender, your guests will enjoy the scent and be bug free as well! Or tuck sprigs of cut lavender into bouquets. Pretty to look at, and very useful!
Lavender distilled hydrosol will keep mosquitoes away when it is applied to the skin. Be sure to buy lavender that has been distilled, and avoid trying to distill it yourself, with insight from the owner of Lavender Skies farm.

Sweet Smelling Deer Resistant Plants & Sprays

With some deer resistant plants & sprays, you can keep deer out of the yard while adding sweet smells to the area. These are attractive, fragrant, and very effective at deterring the four-footed creatures. Deer are not harmed when exposed to these plants or sprays. They just prefer to steer clear of them due to the smell or other qualities.

Geranium & Lavender plants are attractive and feature fragrant foliage that deters deer. No plant or flower is deer proof, but some are more effective than others at deterring deer year round.

Lavender Art By Patricia Wersinger

Patricia Wersinger grew up in Alsace in the East of France. She works in watercolor, oil and acrylic on paper, canvas and wood panels. Her whimsical illustrations and paintings are a mixture of expressionism, realism, children art, folk art, surrealism, primitive and abstract art. Some paintings are playful and bright, childlike and magical and others dark, grim and enigmatic. The notion of the personal is not popular in our generic, commercial culture but for Patricia the discovery of who she is and what strange and uncommon worlds live within her is what makes every painting an interesting journey. Titillating between realistic conventions and free flowing compositions and abstraction, her visual world represents the diary of an ever evolving self and its unique aspects. Playing with conventional realistic illusions and using them as props reveal invisible unconscious forces as if through a third eye. Patricia thinks that the work of art is a way of breaking with the limits imposed on us from the outside, get beyond the world of appearances to reach to the infinity of truth and harmony. A recipient of the Barbara Susman award, Patricia lives and works in New York City

All About Hydrosols

Flower Waters (Hydrosols)
Hydrosols, also known as floral waters, hydroflorates, flower waters or distillates are produced from steam-distilling plant materials. Hydrosols have similar properties to essential oils but are much less concentrated. Unlike their "essential oil added to water" counterparts, true steam-distilled hydrosols contain all the beneficial components that whole plant materials have to offer.
Hydrosols are usually a by-product of essential oil production, but the highest quality comes from devoted distillers who, with artist-like precision, steam small batches of fresh floral and plant material strictly to produce hydrosol (the hydrosols offered by Lavender Skies are produced in this fashion). All of our hydrosols are distilled in copper stills, processed through sterilized methods in Onancock, Virginia. Hydrosols contain all of the essence of the plant in every drop, just like essential oils but in a milder form; making them suitable for all manner of applications where essential oils would be too strong. In most hydrosols there is less than 5% actual oil.
Please note that their aromas are mostly mild and subtle, sometimes bright and fragrant, and most hydrosols have an herby or grassy note indicative of their authentic and therapeutic properties.
Wonderful as a facial splash, body perfume, deodorant or air freshener. Cool a hot flash, change your mood or add them to lotions and creams.
Each of our hydrosols is packaged in a translucent pink, cobalt blue, purple bottle with a black mister. The bulk 8 oz, 16 oz ounce and 1 gallon waters are packaged in HDPE plastic bottles.

A FEW APPLICATIONS FOR HYDROSOLS:
Hydrates dry, sensitive, mature or oily skin after cleansing or shower; apply before using facial oils or creams.
Soothes sunburn and minor irritations of the skin.
Excellent for frequent flyers or high & dry altitudes that can dry out the skin.
Provides a light cooling mist during hot days outdoors or in a dry office.
Use a few tablespoons in a bath for newborns or small children to help calm.

Lavender Art By Wendy Hyde

Wendy Hyde’s large scale oil on canvas or paper works depict the turbulent and monumental nature of our inner worlds. Subtle, smoky hues cross wide, spirited expanses as Hyde’s scraping, swelling, sliding forms fold into veils of cascading light and shadow. These effervescent environments and the artist’s fiery palette serve as a visual narrative which lays out for the audience the restorative power of metaphysical states, emotionality, sensuality and the inner gaze. Chiefly of the Abstract Expressionist school, Hyde names Willem de Kooning, Mark Rothko and Franz Kline as her most profound artistic influences.
Wendy Hyde was born in the UK and studied Fine Art at Coventry University. After teaching Life Drawing Skills for seven years, she decided to devote herself full-time to painting. She currently lives and works in the Midlands area of England.  United in Art: Fine Art from England, Ireland, Scotland, and Wales

About Onancock Virginia

Onancock Town developed quickly into an important community. From 1680 until 1693 the county court was located here, and there was an Anglican church. In the early years Quakers lived in Onancock, and the town was home to the Presbyterian pioneer Francis Makemie. But no permanent church was established until Francis Asbury, the Methodist bishop, preached here in 1788 and a Methodist congregation was founded.
In November 1782, a full year after the surrender of the British at Yorktown, a Marylander named Zedekiah Whaley put into Onancock seeding aid against the tory ships that were still marauding up and down the Chesapeake, and which had just been sighted at the entrance of Onancock Creek. Colonel John Cropper and 25 of this men from the Accomack militia volunteered to lend a hand, and they set sail from Onancock on board Whaley's fleet of barges. On November 30, 1782, the very day that the articles of peace were signed in Europe, the "Battle of the Barges" took place in Dedge's Straits above Smith Island in Maryland. At the first sigh of battle all the American barges fled except Whaley's "Protector," which there upon bore the brunt of the battle. When an ammunition chest aboard the "Protector" exploded, members of the crew who were not killed outright were thrown overboard. or jumped into the water with clothes ablaze. The British easily had the better of the engagement, and among those who died was Commodore Whaley, Cropper, though defeated, arranged an exchange of prisoners, and the Americans put back into to Anechoic with 25 drowned or killed, 29 wounded, and only 11 unscathed. Whaley was buried in Onancock, and in Maryland an official government investigation of the cowardice of the other American commanders was launched.
By the beginning of the 19th century Onancock was out growing its original boundaries and pushing eastward. In 1826 a post office was established, and in 1832 a ferry to Norfolk. Many homes in town today date from the first half of the 1800's When the Union army occupied the peninsula during the Civil War, they singled out Onancock as the place that had "concocted more mischief....in the way of blockade running and disloyalty" than any other community on the Shore.  After the Civil War, Onancock became one of the major stops for the colorful steamboats that ferried both passengers and freight up and down the Chesapeake. This direct link with the larger cities of Virginia and Maryland boosted the town's prosperity and growth, and much of the town dates from this period. The town was incorporated in 1882. Two years later the railroad lines missed Onancock by about two miles, but the town, which lies four miles inland from the bay, benefited from its presence and became even more important as a commercial center and port.
With a population of 1,434, Onancock is today the second largest community on the Eastern Shore of Virginia. Though almost all commerce is by land on the Shore today, the Onancock Wharf is still in use, more than three centuries after its founding.
